12/26/04: Northern Harrier (female), Circus cyaneus, Cary, IL (McHenry)
A Northern Harrier (female), Circus cyaneus was sitting on my bird feeder on
Sunday 12/26 at 10:45 am for about 10 minutes. It's the first I have seen one at
the backyard bird feeders. At first I thought it was the return of a Cooper's Hawk, Accipiter cooperii
that I had seen before at the backyard bird feeders. Once the sun was shining on the bird, it clearly showed the bird
coloring. It had all brown back feathers with white feathers in front. I
could also see the horizontal stripes on the tail feathers.
After 10 minutes it flew to to a group of 30 large trees in back of the Sage
Products building at Three Oaks Blvd and Sage Parkway.

12/19/04: Cooper's Hawk, Cary, IL (McHenry)
A Cooper's Hawk, Accipiter cooperii was sitting on the fence by the backward bird feeders on
Saturday and Sunday. The Cooper's Hawk, Accipiter cooperii started appearing at the feeders on
11/20.
On Saturday I saw it fly to a group of 30 large trees in back of the Sage
Products building at Three Oaks Blvd and Sage Parkway. Just a few minutes
later I was driving that way and saw it flying across the tops of the trees.
On Sunday, I actually saw the Cooper's Hawk, Accipiter cooperii try to catch
an American Goldfinch, Carduelis tristis, but it
could not turn fast enough to catch it. It then proceeded to sit in a large
tree 2 back yards away after missing the bird for about 45 minutes.
Also saw the first 2 Dark-eyed Junco, Junco hyemalis and 3 American Crow, Corvus
brachyrhynchoss at the back yard
feeders on both days.

A cooper hawk was sitting on my bird feeders for about 15 minutes. Then it
hopped on the fence for another 20 minutes. starting at 9:50 am Sunday. I was able to watch
with binoculars the entire time before it flew west.
It appeared that some of the Cooper Hawk black feathers on the back were
turning white.
This may be a revisit from the same Cooper Hawk at the 11/20 sighting in my
backyard.
